• The Australian sun is insanely strong. Try to wear a shirt, hat, sunglasses and SPF 30+ sunscreen lotion, even on the cloudiest days. • Kava, the traditional drink in Fiji, can affect you more than you would think (numbing of your mouth is one thing). Only drink it if you feel comfortable and are somewhere safe. A couple of sips won't do much, however, so don't be worried about trying it if you trust the supplier.Another thing: 20 years ago women NEVER participated in the kava ceremony. In tourist areas this has changed, but in the more traditional islands of Fiji and many other Pacific nations, it remains forbidden.
• Fiji Warning. I have been speaking to some clients who have just returned from a round the world holiday.Try to use your bankcards as little as possible as some of them had $2000 stolen out of their accounts whilst in Fiji.Just as well they had travel insurance so will be getting it back.
• New Zealand was a disturbing place to drive, and as a 42 year old traveller, not much frightens me...but when there are constant hairpin bends and the locals are trying to pass with 20 meter visibility... There were accidents observed on the sides of the roads, and some busses that had fallen off the sides of the mountains.
• Definately don't bring food into New Zealand. Check your backpack before you get on the plane to NZ to make sure you have not had an apple that you bought 3 days ago in your handbag and have forgotten about it, for when it is found you WILL get fined NZ$200 on the spot and not even be able to eat the thing! This means any fruit, seeds or food.
